Title: People and the Environment

Introduction: Imagine a world where everywhere you go, there are people. They travel all around the world, and it's hard to find a place they haven't already been. But did you know that this wasn't always the case? Let's learn more about people and how they interact with their environment.

Early People: Long ago, nobody knows exactly when, the first people appeared on Earth. They probably started in Africa and slowly spread out to other parts of the world. Back then, there were very few people, and they didn't make much of a difference to their surroundings.

Changing Environments: As time passed, more and more people were born, and they started to change the environment around them. They cleared land to grow food and build homes, factories, and roads. They also dug up the land for resources like stone, minerals, and fuel. Today, there are over seven billion people in the world, and everywhere you look, you can see their impact on the environment.

Harming the Environment: Unfortunately, people often harm the environment without realizing it. They create pollution by littering and releasing chemicals into the air, water, and soil. They also harm animals by hunting them for food, fur, or other materials.

Endangered Species: Some animals and plants have become extinct, meaning they've completely disappeared from the Earth. Others are endangered, which means there are very few of them left. Many animals lose their homes when people clear land for farming or building, putting them at risk of extinction. For example, tigers are endangered because people hunt them and destroy their forest homes.

Activities:

  1. Improving School Grounds for Wildlife:
    • Think about ways to make your school grounds a better place for wildlife. What special equipment would you need? Who would take care of the plants and animals during school holidays?
  2. Creating a Spreadsheet of Endangered Wildlife:
    • Make a list of endangered animals and plants, including where they live, how many are left, and what threatens them. Use reference books to gather information.

By understanding how people affect the environment, we can work together to protect it for future generations and the many plants and animals that call it home.
