PTE Academic Reading Section Overview along with examples

Reading section of the PTE Academic exam into its various question types, provide a template for each, along with examples for higher band performance, and suggest some vocabulary that may be useful.

Reading Section Overview:

  1. Multiple Choice, Single Answer (MCQ-SA):

    • You will read a passage followed by a question with multiple options.
    • Choose the most appropriate answer.

    Template: The passage discusses [brief summary]. According to the passage, [question]? The correct answer is [option] because [explanation].

    Example: Passage: The benefits of exercise on mental health. Question: What is one of the positive effects of exercise mentioned in the passage? Answer: Option B - Improved mood and reduced stress levels. Explanation: The passage highlights that exercise can enhance mood and decrease stress, which aligns with option B.

  2. Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer (MCQ-MA):

    • Similar to MCQ-SA, but there may be more than one correct answer.

    Template: In the passage, it is mentioned that [question]. The correct answer options are [options]. This is because [explanation].

    Example: Passage: Types of renewable energy sources. Question: Which of the following are mentioned as renewable energy sources? Answer: Options A, C, and D - Solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. Explanation: The passage discusses solar, wind, and hydroelectric power as examples of renewable energy sources.

  3. Re-order Paragraphs:

    • Arrange given paragraphs in the correct sequence.

    Template: To create a coherent passage, the correct order of the paragraphs is [sequence]. This is because [explanation].

    Example: Given Paragraphs:

    1. Conclusion - Benefits of organic farming.
    2. Introduction - Explanation of organic farming.
    3. Description of organic farming practices.

    Correct Order: 2-3-1 Explanation: It is logical to introduce the concept of organic farming first, followed by a description of its practices, and then conclude with its benefits.

  4. Fill in the Blanks (Reading & Writing):

    • Fill in the missing words in a given passage.

    Template: In the passage, the missing words are [words]. These words are essential for [explanation].

    Example: Passage: The effects of climate change on ecosystems are [blank]. Missing Words: diverse, widespread, devastating Explanation: These words complete the sentence to convey the severity and broad impact of climate change on ecosystems.

Vocabulary Suggestions:

  • Positive Effects: beneficial, advantageous, favorable
  • Negative Effects: detrimental, adverse, harmful
  • Sequences: firstly, subsequently, consequently
  • Cause and Effect: consequently, thus, as a result

Remember, to achieve a higher band score, focus on understanding the main idea, identifying key details, and demonstrating a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical structures in your responses. Practice actively reading different types of texts to enhance your comprehension skills.
