PTE Speaking & Writing section of the Academic exam

Speaking & Writing section of the PTE Academic exam and provide templates and examples for each task:

  1. Personal Introduction: Template:

    • Hello, my name is [Your Name]. I come from [Your Country]. I currently reside in [Your City/Town]. I am [Your Age] years old. I completed my education in [Your Field of Study] from [Your University/College]. In my free time, I enjoy [Your Hobbies/Interests]. Example:
    • Hello, my name is Emily Smith. I come from the United States. I currently reside in New York City. I am 25 years old. I completed my education in Business Administration from Columbia University. In my free time, I enjoy reading and traveling.

  2. Read Aloud: Template:

    • In this task, you will have to read a text aloud. You will have 30-40 seconds to prepare before you start speaking. Make sure to emphasize correct pronunciation, intonation, and pacing. Example:
    • Text: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." Pronunciation Tip: Ensure clear articulation and stress on important words: quick, brown, fox, jumps, lazy, dog.

    • Fluency Important
    • Skip don't if know, not all, then replace with known words with similar

  1. Repeat Sentence: Template:

    • In this task, you will hear a sentence. Repeat the sentence exactly as you hear it. Make sure to speak clearly and accurately. Example:
    • Sentence: "The conference will take place next Monday at 9:00 a.m." Response: "The conference will take place next Monday at 9:00 a.m."

  2. Describe Image: Template:

    • In this task, you will be presented with an image. Take a moment to observe the image carefully. Begin by describing the main features, then provide details about each feature. Conclude with a summary statement. Example:
    • Image: A line graph showing the increase in global temperatures over the past century. Description: "This is a line graph depicting the trend of global temperatures from the year 1900 to the present. Initially, temperatures were relatively stable, but around the mid-20th century, there was a significant upward trend, indicating a sharp increase in temperatures. This trend has continued to rise steadily since then, with occasional fluctuations. Overall, it shows a concerning rise in global temperatures over the past century."

Describe Image is a very important item type in PTE. Generally, they are 6-7 repetition of this item type. They are extremely scoring and are very easy to score. It contributes solely to your speaking score which includes the content, pronunciation, and oral fluency. You will have 25 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to respond to each task.

Each Describe image is of 15 marks as under:

Content – 5
Pronunciation – 5
Oral Fluency – 5

There are 5 types of Describe Images typically show in the PTE Academic Test.

  1. Bar Chart
  2. Pie Chart
  3. Line Chart
  4. Table
  5. Others – Flow Chart, Map, Mixed Chart, Picture, etc.

1. Templates for Bar Chart

First of all, the bar chart is the best type to practice your Describe Image task with templates. Because it provides all of the factors clearly and logically. These factors include the topic, figures, differences or similarities, and so on.

  1. The bar chart represents/shows/reveals the information about (TOPIC/ TITLE) and (CATEGORIES IN THE BAR CHART)…
  2. It can be seen from the chart, that the highest figure is (FIGURE) which is (NAME OF CATEGORY), following by (NAME OF CATEGORY)…
  3. However/On the contrary, the lowest figure is (FIGURE) which is (NAME)…
  4. In conclusion, it can be seen that (TREND/HIGHEST/LOWEST/SILIMARITY/DIFFERENCE)…

2. Templates for Pie Chart

This is similar to the bar chart, you can simply mention the highest and lowest figures and any other important features (similarity/ difference) that show in the pie chart.

  1. The Pie chart reveals (TITLE) and (CATEGORIES) …
  2. It can be observed that (NAME OF CATEGORY) is the highest, followed by (NAME OF NEXT HIGHEST CATEGORY)
  3. The lowest (CATEGORY WHICH IS THE LOWEST)
  4. Overall, it can be observed that (TREND/HIGHEST/LOWEST/SILIMARITY/DIFFERENCE)…

3. Templates for Line Chart

Line charts are developed on XY Axis and are easy to understand as we have been doing them since our school days.

These sentences may be helpful when you describe a trend.

“The figures increased sharply to reach a peak of ……”
“The number gradually fell to reach a low of ……”
“The figures variates between …… and …….”
“It steadily rose, peaking at ……”
“After several fluctuations, it touched a peak/low of ……”
“The number eventually decreased/increased to ……”

  1. The line chart describes information about (TOPIC/ TITLE).
  2. The highest figure in (NAME) is at (FIGURE), and it gradually declined/increased to reach a low/high of ((FIGURE).
  3. On the contrary, the lowest figure in (NAME) is at (FIGURE), and it gradually rose/dropped to (FIGURE).
  4. In conclusion, it can be seen that (TREND/HIGHEST/LOWEST/DIFFERENCE/SIMILARITY).

4. Templates for Tables

In this type, it is unnecessary to describe all of the figures in the table. The tables can be huge or can be small. If it is a large table, do not explain everything. On the contrary, if it is small, explain everything.

  1. The table provides important information about (TOPIC/TITLE).
  2. As we can see from the table, there are several figures in terms of (ELEMENT A), (ELEMENT B), (ELEMENT C)… …
  3. The highest figure is (FIGURE) which is (NAME), while the lowest figure is (FIGURE) which is (NAME).
  4. Moreover, from (TIME) to (TIME), the figure of (NAME) was increased/decreased significantly/gradually.
  5. In conclusion, it can be said that (TREND).

5. Templates for Flow ChartMap, Mixed Chart, and Picture

This 5th category type requires describing a process, map, image etc. Therefore, you need to master vocabularies regarding some changes such as “develop”, “convert”, “transform”, and “turn into”. This task is sometimes tricky because there are too many or few processes to describe for 40 seconds. The core part to complete this type of task is that cut off or add more details from the provided flow chart.

  1. The flowchart/ diagram/image gives the picture/process/ life cycle of (TOPIC/TITLE).
  2. There are various steps/stages in the flow chart…
  3. Initially/ in the first step/stage, (THE FIRST PROCESS)…
  4. Moreover, it is transformed/converted into (THE SECOND PROCESS)…
  5. In the next step/stage, it is further developed/turns into (THE THIRD PROCESS)…
  6. Finally, (THE FINAL PROCESS)…
  7. The map provides information about (TOPIC/TITLE).
  8. There are various places described in the map such as (PLACE NAMES).
  9. Initially, in the north, (FACTS/ELEMENTS).
  10. Moreover, in the middle part of the map, (FACTS/ELEMENTS).
  11. Lastly, in the south, (FACTS/ELEMENTS).

  1. Re-tell Lecture: Template:

    • In this task, you will hear a lecture or a short dialogue. Take notes while listening. Begin by providing a brief overview of the topic. Then, sequentially recount the main points discussed in the lecture/dialogue. Example:
    • Lecture: A discussion on the importance of renewable energy sources. Summary: "The lecture emphasized the significance of shifting towards renewable energy sources to mitigate climate change. It discussed various renewable energy options such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. Additionally, it highlighted the environmental benefits and economic advantages of investing in renewable energy technologies."
    • Tips:
    • 1 or 2 Questions [8 to 10 marks]
    • Closer those maker after answering questions. [Ink may get dry]
    • You will hear a lecture, After listening to the lecture, in 10 sec, please speak into the microphone and retell what you have just heard from the lecture in your own words, you will have 40 sec to give your response
    • No need to speak 40 sec, 25- to 30 sec speaking enough
    • Speak in Natural way clearly without stop or slow in a flow
    • When you listen don't write, when you write dont listen
    • Don't worry about grammar and spellings
    • Write 4-5 Small Phases instead of just keywords, Use the template and Just Speak
    • When you have less phase, just repat it

    • In this task, you will hear a question. Respond with a concise answer within 1-3 words or a short phrase. Example:

    • Don't know repeat question ex: France, Capital, or
    • What is the capital of France

  3. Summarize Written Text: Template:

    • In this task, you will be presented with a passage. Summarize the main points of the passage in one sentence. Ensure clarity and conciseness in your response. Example:
    • Passage: (Original text) "Climate change poses significant challenges to global sustainability, requiring urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards renewable energy sources."
    • Summary: "Addressing climate change necessitates immediate efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and adopt renewable energy alternatives."

  4. Essay: Template:

    • In this task, you will have to write an essay on a given topic. Start with an introduction, presenting the topic and your stance. Follow with body paragraphs, each discussing a separate point with supporting examples or evidence. Finally, conclude by summarizing your main arguments and restating your opinion. Example:
    • Topic: "Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of online education." Introduction: Provide an overview of online education and your opinion. Body Paragraphs: Discuss advantages (flexibility, accessibility) and disadvantages (lack of face-to-face interaction, technological barriers). Conclusion: Summarize key points and restate opinion, acknowledging the nuanced nature of online education.

Remember to practice each task extensively, focusing on accuracy, fluency, and coherence to achieve a higher band score in the Speaking & Writing section of the PTE Academic exam.
