what's in the news Weather in the News Floods Kids Education Grade 3 Exam Guide

Geography

what's in the news!

Weather in the News: Think about when you look outside your window. Is it sunny or rainy? Maybe it's snowy or windy! The weather changes a lot, and that's why it's often in the news. Some places, like where you might live, have similar weather every day. But in other parts of the world, it can change a lot, even from hour to hour!

Floods: Do you know what happens when it rains a lot or when snow melts? All that water has to go somewhere! Sometimes it goes into rivers, but if there's too much, the river can overflow and flood nearby land. Even the sea and strong winds can cause flooding, especially near the coast. Floods can be very dangerous, destroying homes, crops, and even hurting people and animals.

Did You Know?: Long ago in 1887, a river in China flooded and sadly, a million people lost their lives. It's important to be prepared and stay safe during floods.

Activities:

  • Why does the weather change? Well, it's because of something called wind! The sun heats up different parts of the Earth, and that makes the air move, creating winds.
  • Rain is super important for us! It gives us water to drink, helps our plants grow, and keeps animals alive.
  • Sometimes floods can be good! When a river floods, it spreads mud and sand which is great for growing crops.

Fun Activities for You:

  • You can keep track of how much rain falls in different places for a week and make a list from the wettest to the driest.
  • You can also find a picture of a weather event, like flooding or heavy snow, and pretend to be a newspaper reporter. Write a story about what happened before, during, and after the event.

So, weather and floods might seem like big things, but now you know a bit more about them and why they're in the news!
